You can be a "Learning Buddy"
Information for Tutoring Volunteers
Last year about 15 KUMC volunteers we're calling "learning buddies" met with students or small groups on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. There was academic work done, lots of reading, playing games many enrichment activities.
Information for Tutoring Volunteers
All tutoring volunteers must complete the Volunteer Applications (available in the church office)
First, some more information about filling out the yellow/blue Volunteer Application forms - at the bottom of page 2, you do not need to list the 3 character references, instead, ask another person to fill out one blue Volunteer Reference Check form. You may notice the request for a fee on the Criminal Record search form - neither you or KUMC is required to pay a fee. Include the two loose forms with your application, put the application in a sealed envelope and return it to the KUMC receptionist who will note your name.
- Training sessions will be scheduled just before or early in the school year.
- If you are tutoring once or twice a month, tutoring may take the form of playing board or card-type games with one or a small group of students. Besides the value of the students learning these type of games for recreation, in addition to the electronic games, a number of skills, e.g. taking turns, math, changing money, developing a strategy, can be taught through games. You are encouraged to donate games of this type to the school that either you no longer use or can be bought inexpensively. Some of the games mentioned include Monopoly, Chinese Checkers, UNO, checkers, Chutes & Ladders and Othello.
Remember, before you are allowed to start tutoring, the Volunteer Application from must be turned in at KUMC (which will be delivered to the St. Louis Public Schools' office). You will receive notification of approval to begin tutoring.
The school is located at 6031 Southwest Avenue near the intersection of Watson and Hampton. As you face the school from Southwest Avenue, go to the left-hand entrance and buzz to be let in. The school office is at the top of the first flight of stairs going up. You may park in front of the school if you are there in the morning. For afternoon visits, find a nearby space on the street, because school buses load in front of the building.
Again, thank you for volunteering.
